Question
So, if she is ok with it, it is "safe" to try and get comfortable? I realize it has only been a few days, but since the c1 and c2 are now fused, nothing should go wrong correct? thanks very much for your input, i appreciate it!

Question -
My mom sustained a C2 fracture last week Wednesday. Had surgery Saturday, to fuse C1 and C2. Is obviously uncomfortable, nervous to move, and sleep. Do you know how long, before she can feel "safe" moving her head? I mean, sleeping say, on her side or to the side? The surgery went great, she has movement of everything, but getting around is tough, especially with a broken ankle. Any thoughts you have, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Answer -
Sorry to hear about the injury, but glad everything went well.  Trust will come with time, as long as the surgery "went well" there should not be any complications, sleep how ever is comfortable.  Starting exercises, with physical therapy, as soon as the doctors will allow will help regain and maintain movement.  The only thing I can foresee are headaches.  There are dural attachments from the spinal cord to the 1st two vertebrae, and as they are less mobile the more stagnant the cerebral spinal fluid becomes.  Medications are not the answer for this.  I am part of a group of chiropractors that specialize in cranial work and dural involvement.  If this problem should arrise, go to www.sorsi.com to find a doctor near you.  If you are in Minnesota near the Twin Cities, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please email me.

Answer
If it is truly fused, there should be no problems.  There could be some scar tissue that forms due to the surgery that could irritate the nerves in that area, then she would have some increased pains and maybe "tingling" to the area that nerve supplies.  These are just heads ups, not that they will happen.  But don't hesitate to find answers if you don't get what you are looking for.  You may email me at any time with any more questions.
