Lower back pain for accident

Question
Today I was rear ended. I was just about to a stop and they hit me going 15+ because both air bags had gone off and there car was totaled. I didn't feel anything at the time of the accident but my back has just been getting to me more and more. I've had prior back troubles where my lower back has hurt, but its been quite a few years. Is this anything to worry about or could I just go to a chiropractor and get it fixed.

Answer
Dear Angelo,

Yes this is something to worry about.  The force (kinetic energy) that is transferred from the striking vehicle into the occupant (you) can be very significant (upwards of 10-20 G's). This is enough force to cause spinal fractures, spinal cord bruising, herniated disks and internal bleeding.  Get it checked out...you will never know what the extent of the injury is without a full examination, and if something serious is found, you will need to seek care immediately (chiropractic or medical).

That being said, chiropractic physicians are a great choice to manage these injuries and I would definitely recommend that you find a good one in the next 2-3 days for an examination.  The Spine Research Institute of San Diego has a great website for resources on auto crash trauma, and a physician listing of doctors who have completed specialized training in car crash injuries.  Check out www.srisd.com for more information.

If you need any further help, feel free to write back.

Respectfully,
Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
