Question
I fell downstairs landing on my upper back have had xrays and they show no significant injury apart from a compressed wedge fracture in my lower back which they say is old and Ive no pain in that area but Im up cant sleep as when I lie down the pain is going through to my chest and its unbearable the pain is also located around my upper spine and shoulder blades I am on prescribed medication and have seen my gp she is awaiting the xray reports from the hospital I really am not coping with the pain and can not lie down as then it goes through to my chest I have no difficulty breathing but it does hurt when I breathe on lying down when I fell I landed with some force on a wooden step on my upper back and it profusely winded me and I momentarily couldnt breathe although the xray has shown no significant injury I am worried about this severe pain that goes right through to my chest as its unbearable

Answer
You might have a disc injury in your spine causing the pain radiation into your chest. X-rays won't show it, so you may need other imaging. It's also quite possible you may have injured something in your chest or ribcage even though you fell on your back. Just keep following up with your general practitioner and she should be able to manage your condition for you the best.

*As a follow up to your response. Sometimes it's hard to detect small fractures on x-rays. CT scans and bone scans are more effective at detecting certain bone pathologies.
