Question
Hello Dr. Tsatsos,

I wanted to know what type of exercise is the absolute best to help repair and strengthen the achilles tendon. Would swimming and calf machines be good?
I understand that calf exercises help to absorb some of the impact; however, I wanted to know if there is anything that can strengthen the actual tendon.
Would vibrational therapy (utilizing technology similar to the ab strengthening vibrating kit) help?

Answer
This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Orthopedic Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......

Dear Jake
If the Achilles tendon has a transverse tear-it needs rest & immobilization, perhaps gentle ankle range of motion to repair itself.
If the Achilles tendon has a longitudinal tear-it needs gentle ankle range of motion, gentle loading reps(low weight)and possible physical therapy to repair itself.
If the Achilles tendon has been repaired-it needs gentle ankle range of motion, medium loading reps(low weight)fatigue and holds-until mild and possible physical therapy to repair itself.
Example of medium loading reps standing on a 2" elevation and holding 15-25 lb dumbbells on each hand and doing leg raises and heel down to the ground @ 12-20 reps x 3 x 3-4 times a week x 4 months.
You can also do lunges.
Be careful and if there is pain-back off and see your doctor
Hope This Helps!
and
Good Luck!
