Scheuermanns disease

Question
My boyfriend knows he has this disease but he claims he can't do anything about it... His family discovered it when he was 16, and he is now 20. Is there anything he or I can do to help? I hate to see the pain it causes him. Some days he can barley walk.

Sincerely,
Shelly

Answer
Hi Shelley,
Toronto Back Pain Clinic patients and Spinal Decompression Toronto patients ask this question to me regularly, and specifically
I just had a similar question about this very topic in this forum! Also from a concerned girlfriend.

Scheurmann's disease is the the development of a Kyphosis or a curving of the spine. The development of this curve often leads to a bowing or rounding of the back, and often develops into hunchback or slouching posture that can cause serious pain. As there are a number of different causes - the treatment can vary.

If it is congenital the treatment can require surgery at an early age. In general, curvatures greater than 60 degrees are considered for surgery. If less they are sometimes fitted with a brace and physical therapy.  Often patients who receive chiropractic care find significant relief in these cases, albeit temporarily.

If the condition is due to trauma or even severe osteoporosis causing multiple compression fractures of the spine then, if there are no problems with either the nervous system of compression to the lungs then surgery may not necessarily be warranted

Finally, if the curvature is due to either a tumor or infection then treatment may require an aggressive measure which may include drugs and/or surgery.

So Shelley,
At the very least he should be consulting with a doctor to gain clarity as to what the cause of his curvature is. Also he should have regular check-ups to follow its progress. Only with clarity will he be able to properly consider his options.

One thing for sure is that he has a loving and caring girl friend who should be commended for her genuine concern. His world is better because of this.

Can you please take a moment out to rate my answer, and consider to nominate me as expert of the month and leave a comment.

God Bless you for your care and concern!
