Question
Hello, I just found out that a very close friend (ex boyfriend) is not paralyzed from the nipples down. I am just wondering how to cope with this. How can i support him. What can he do to help himself? I am worried, he is a best friend. Is it too soon to go visit him? I dont'know, doctors say 90% chance he won't get feeling back. This just happend 3 days ago. Is their any hope for him. Can he do anything at this stage to better the odds? I have so many questions...any advice about the whole situation, mental state he will be in, what to expect...ah...so many things...anything is appreciated.

Thanks Kanena

Answer
Hi Kanena,
Thanks so much for your question.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It's not to soon to visit him. In fact, visiting him now or as soon as possible is most likely best for him. You need to keep a positive attitude at all times. He will be feeling somewhat depressed at times and you will need to let him know that his life is not over with.

Sometimes, people with spinal cord injuries begin to feel depressed and/or begin feeling sorry for themselves. This only makes the situation worse. You can help him do things but do not let him depend solely on you or anyone else.

As far as his physical condition, it's going to take some time for the swelling of his spinal cord to decrease and the shock to wear off. To be honest, he has a long road of recovery ahead with physical and occupational therapy.

I want to stress again that a positive attitude from family and friends is vital to his recovery. Plus, please do not let what a doctor says about his limitations influence what he can do. I know of people who have beat the odds and are doing things doctors told them they would never do again.

I hope this helps you and if you have any other questions, PLEASE feel free to ask me anytime.

Thanks again,
John McKinzie
