Question
In dec 2006, a car accident left my brother with a c5-c6  spinal cord injury which has extended to c7 till date.he is not able to move his body below his chest and infact not able to move his limbs. can we expect a recovery at his end.presently he is going through his physothrapy and his medicines.

Answer
Hello Sumit-
I will tell you the truth- I have never heard of someone with an actual spinal cord injury recovering to the way they were before injury.  The bones can heal, muscles can heal, but the spinal cord and brain are different.  Most often people with c5-6 injuries will have some use of their arms, but their hands will be limited, and there is no movement below the chest.  So your description sounds correct for his injury level.

Though this will likely remain as his level of function, he will learn to do alot of things better and more independently as he continues in therapy and gets back out in the world.  People are very adaptable, and with assistive technology he can learn to drive or do many things that may seem out of reach now.

Thanks for your question.  I hope this information has been helpful, and I wish you and your brother good luck.

Leslie
