Question
I am building a home that is as accessible as possible.  Due to an engineering requirement I now have a pantry that is very narrow and would like to "borrow" some room from a hallway that is currently 42 inches wide.  Hallway length is 7 feet.  The pantry is also now 42 inches and needs more width to be usable.  How narrow can I make the hallway and still have it be usable by a wheelchair/

Thanks, Carol

Answer
The minimum suggested witdth is 32". That is too narrow for many bigger chairs (especially power chairs) or people who use chairs and have difficulty with fine control of the chair.

There is also the issue of doors, closets, and cabinets in the hallway- any doors on the sides will need room to manuever. Doors even on the ends can cause problems, especially if they open into the hall.

Now- I am just an adaptive technician. I modify chairs and stuff. What you really need is an architect or builder with experience in the field.
