Question
I have LBP and pain in right gluteus. Pain is increased during hyperextension of the back and prolonged sitting. I done neurolocical and physiatrics exams and both doctors said that is not disc herniation or any discopathy. My NMRI shows no pathology. I aslo have kyphosis(round back) and desreet scoliosis.I went to chiropractor and after 2 treatments pain is even worst. Chiropractor says that is normal reaction of the facet joints from the treatments. Is that possible even increased pain lasts for 4 days after manipulation and is chiropractic unsafe in any way?

Answer
Hi Milos,

The short answers are:  yes one may have some increased pain at first and yes chiropractic can be unsafe.

To elaborate on the first issue.  Much like waking up the day after one's first aerobic class, you might say, "Is this stuff good for you?"  You know that it is but, man, there's some initial pain to work through.

That being said, it should not continue to be worse for a long time.  The doc needs to evaluate other approaches to his treatment if this persists for any longer.

Worst case scenario, go for a second opinion.  The site below can help you find local chiropractors.

This relates to the second question.  Chiropractic can be unsafe if you have certain problems (ie broken bones, cancer in the area, and so on) or if it is applied poorly.  Again the second opinion possibility.

Let me point out that I have the maximum malpractice insurance any doctor can get.  It is about $2500 per year.  Without exaggeration, no MD can get that coverage for ten times as much.  So, the question becomes, "Who is hurting people?"  Chiropractic is very safe.

Please don't get the idea that I want you to distrust your doctor of chiropractic.  They are usually sincere and capable people.  Directly address your concerns to them.

Hope this helps clarify a bit.
