Question
For several months now i have had a pain in the left chest area after spending hundreds of dollars on doctors visit I went to see a Chiropractor and he told my left rib was popped out of place after seeing him for several weeks it is better but it feels as if the center or left side of the rib is sticking out is there anything i can do to make this pain/discomfort go away and for some reason in mainly bothers me late at night after work not so much on the weekends when it bothers me it feels as if someone is pulling hair on my chest and an occasional sharp pain every once in a while

Answer
Hello Mark,

Glad to hear you had some relief from the Chiropractic treatment.  When ribs displace they can radiate pain from the spine (where they insert to the vertebrae) around to the chest or vice versa.  Often the soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligaments) between the ribs or at the insertion points tear when the rib is displaced.  After being adjusted by your doctor you may want to have soft tissue work above and below the affected rib along it's rib cage path.  Moving around during the day and weekends helps decrease the muscular pain, when sitting or laying the muscles will tighten causing a increase in pain.
Ask your Doctor of Chiropractic to perform soft tissue work before or after the adjustment, you may find this vary beneficial.

Have a great day,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
