MRI scan report

Question
Dear Sir
My wife says she had a strangulation from me on  a particular night . After that we did not get her treated and she was suffering from severe neck pain and could not swallow food.
When she went to her parents home for some urgent work , her father got her treated with a neighbour doctor for her neck pain and found her husband had strangulated her.
She got a MRI scan saying "Straightening of Cervical Spine"
No where in the report it is mentioned as wound, hurt or injury or any kind of rashes

How is it possible when I have not strangulated her for her to get neck pain  and MRI scan report

Regards
Chandrashekar

Answer
Dear Chandrashekar,

Neck pain can be the result of many things even poor sleeping positions so there must be more than just pain as a finding to give a diagnosis about anything. A physical examination would need to be conducted including the inspection of the neck tissues visually and with palpation techniques to look for signs of trauma or dysfunction. Specifically if strangulation was suspected, there should have been bruising of the neck as well as possible ligature marks which indicate a tightening effect on the tissue.

Depending on what was found on the physical examination, the doctor then would order the MRI to confirm tissue damage or look for damage that is suspected but was not confirmed.  The MRI will not show causation of the results of injury or pathological change...the MRI does not diagnose the problem, it is up to the doctor reading the report to give an opinion of what has been found.

Hope this helps your understanding Chandrashekar, and I hope for you and your wife's sake this gets cleared up.  Either she is lying or you are, accusing someone of strangulation is pretty strong.  I would suggest that you both look into some counseling.

Respectfully,
Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
