Question
I recently suffered from DVT and now have to take Coumadin for how long I don't know,  I was taking Bextra for pain but my Dr. says I can't taker it while on Coumadin.  What else beside Tylenol(which does not help) can I take?

Answer
Barbara,

Unfortunately there is little you can take while on Coumadin. Since you were on Bextra I assume you were taking if for some type of arthritis. It this is the case ask your doctor about taking an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. Many people find relief from arthritis pain with omega 3. It unusually takes about two weeks to notice a big difference. Before you decide to take it talk to the doctor prescribing the Coumadin. There are many supplements and herbs that should not be taken with Coumadin, I do not think omega 3 is one of them but since I do not work with this drug it is best to run it by your doctor.

I understand living with pain. I lost a kidney to anti-inflammatories. Because of this for years I have had to live with sever pain because of the risk to my good kidney. I understand the need to end the pain but DVT is life threatening and that has to be treated first.

It may be helpful to ask your doctor for a referral to a pain specialist. There are non-drug options available for treating pain.

I wish I could be of more help. If there are any other questions I could be of help with let me know.

I wish you well and a quick recovery.
