Question
Hello.  I went swimming one day and did like 3 laps in the pool on the instruction of my PT due to some chronic shoulder and neck pain I have been experiencing.  When I went to sit in the car I had this weird feeling (like electrical stimulation) in and around my glutes especially where the hamstrings attach on both sides.  Sitting became uncomfortable.  Then a month later after doing some jumping jacks and light running my heels started hurting.  Same feeling of electrical stimulation.  The past couple of days my wrists and the outside of my palms have had that same feeling.  If pressure is put on any of these areas it starts to become painful.  Do you have any idea why all this is happening and why I'm having chronic shoulder and neck pain as well.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Personally I feel like something is causing all these things and it's just not isolated incidents of plantar fascitis or carpal tunnel etc etc. Please help.  Thank you

Answer
Amit,

Pain and an electrical shocking feeling in your body most often have to with the spine. This type of pain is neuropathic pain or nerve pain. It is caused when pressure is put on the nerve where it leaves the spine. It can cause this type of pain in the arms, legs, hands or feet.

Conditions like arthritis in your spine or degenerative disk disease can cause this type of random pain.

There are other conditions that can cause these types of symptoms. The fact that you have neck and shoulder pain and that these symptoms came after physical activity suggest that it is associated with the spine.

It would be a good idea to talk to a doctor about these things or a neurologist.
