Natural ways of relieving pain, like acupressure, have always been the most preferred treatment over conventional options. This Buzzle article gives you an insight about the pressure points to relieve neck pain.

Acupressure point for neck pain Old is Gold
The earliest records of formally recognized acupressure points are found in a Chinese medical text named Nei Ching. This is also the oldest known medical document, believed to be written between 2697 BC to 2596 BC.Pressure points relieve pain by releasing endorphins in the body, which are the body's natural pain relievers. These points are also called acupressure points. They are healing points that promote relaxation to treat disease and pain, and are located along the channels or meridians in the body from the head to toes. Pressure is applied on these points to relieve pain and even mental stress.

For many years, due to the effectiveness and natural traits of acupressure, more people are resorting to acupressure for self-healing. This treatment is simple, yet effective to a great extent, contrary to the belief that says acupressure is more of psychological healing. Most people use this method for relieving common pains like headaches, migraine, and a stiff neck. So, here, we will see how acupressure can ease and relieve pain in the neck area.

Pressure Points for Neck Pain Relief
Pain and stiffness in the neck is a common condition, mainly caused by incorrect posture. Below is a quick guide to help you ease this neck pain with acupressure. Though there are many points which ease neck pain, you can use any one or two, whichever suits you the best.

#1 Gates of Consciousness
Where: Below the skull, half a thumb below the hairline.

This point can be easily located if you run your hand along the base of the skull. You will find hollows just below the skull bone on both sides of the neck. Both these points are around 3 inches or 4 finger-widths apart. This is a very effective point in relieving a stiff neck and pain. Firmly press these hollows and tilt your head back, and close your eyes as you do this. Release after a minute or two, or when you feel the pain is subsiding.
#2 Wind Mansion
Where: Center of the back of the head.

Just like the two hollows near the base of the skull, this pressure point is also located half a thumb below the hairline, but in the center. It is located in the center in the hollow that one may feel at the base of the skull.
#3 Window of Heaven
Where: Small depression near the base of the skull near the earlobes.

This acupressure point is again located at the base of the skull. It you measure two inches from the back of the earlobe, you will find an indention. These points are on both sides of the neck. They are also very close to the other two points that are at the base of the skull.
#4 Drilling Bamboo
Where: Forehead, where the ridge of the eyebrows intersects the bridge of the nose.

This point is located just where the nose bridge meets the eyebrow ridge (indention on the inner side of the eye sockets). Press firmly, massage lightly in circular motions if required on these points with the thumb. Release slowly as you feel relaxed.
#5 Heavenly Pillar
Where: Below the base of the skull.

These points are located just half an inch away from the base of the skull, on both sides of the neck . From here, if you measure half an inch outward on both sides of the spine, you will get these points. Follow the same instructions for applying pressure. Slowly release.
#6 Shoulder Well Point
Where: On the shoulder line, three fingers out of the neckline, on the highest point on the shoulder.

Start locating this point from the side of the lower neck on both sides. Measure about 2 inches outward from this point, which should be the highest point of your shoulder. So ideally, you should locate this point closer to the neck, rather than midway. Along with relief from a stiff neck, this point also benefits the release of stress and tension in the shoulders.
#7 Lesser Mansion
Where: Between the index finger and middle finger.

Another effective pressure point for relieving neck pain is located on the hand. You can find this point near the 'V' shape that forms below the index and the middle finger, just where you can feel the fleshy part below the knuckles on the rear side of your hand. Apart from points on the neck itself, this point is effective in relieving a stiff neck and pain. Press this point with your thumb, and while doing this, point the index finger toward the upper side of the palm. Release after 2 minutes.

#8 Back Ravine
Where: When you hold just below the little finger, run your hand towards the side, till you reach a small depression. This is another point for neck pain relief.

Simple Tips to Follow
