Negative Emotions and Back Pain

Emotions play a very important part in one’s life. Be they negative or positive, they have a tremendous impact on one’s lifestyle and thus on the health. But emotions are something that we cannot do away with. So, the only solution remains that we should know the art of dealing with our emotions.

Since emotions are such an important part of our lives, they also have an impact on the various diseases and disorders that we suffer from. And pain is one of the common disorders, that has a direct relation with our emotions.

Of all the pain that we suffer from back pain is one that is very common among people and presence of negative emotions work in an opposite direction of curing it. Researches over the years have shown the positive intervention in ones emotions are able to cure many of the lifestyle disorders like back pain, depression, arthritis, blood pressure, to name a few.

The studies have brought out to us that it is our brain that processes pain, which is generated in the back. This process takes place in several brain areas like the cingulated cortex, thalamus and the amygdala. All these brain areas are located at a place where most of emotional or physiological activity in a human being takes place. Biologically, all these areas are collectively known as ‘pain matrix.’

Further this pain matrix system is divided into two systems that work parallel to each other. They are the medical pain system and the other is the lateral system. The medical pain system is responsible to process the emotions related to pain while the lateral system works by processing the physical sensations. These areas also help a patient to cope up with back pain.

Now when negative emotions like anger, anxiety, depression and other negatives reach the pain matrix system, the emotions are processed and the brain is sent a message that the body is not healthy. This message after being processed by the brain is sent to our body parts, specially the back, where it is interpreted in the form of pain. Thus, this clearly indicates that the negative emotions do counter the already existing pain in the body but aggravates it.

The treatment that is used to solve the harmful effective of negative emotions is known as physiological treatment. The foremost step in this direction is to control one’s emotion, by not letting them over-flow and control our body.

But the battle is not all lost for you. There are several conventional treatments that you can depend upon. They are massage, biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation, yoga and aromatherapy. You can use these treatments individually as well as in a mix to cure your back pain. Also, taking guidelines from a good medical practitioner is one positive step that you can take in this direction.

Thus back pain due to negative emotions is not a very difficult disorder to cure. All you need is a little self-control and a healthy lifestyle.
