bump on outside of foot

Question
I just noticed a bump on the outside of my right foot. It's located about one inch below my ankle. I think I should have an x-ray. Should I be worried about it?

Answer
Hi Shelley,

It is not likely that the bump on your foot is worrisome.

The bump you describe may just be a normal finding.  However, you could have an enlarged foot bone or a cyst that has formed in an area of high stress in the foot.  Sometimes these cysts will get larger and smaller throughout the day.

I would highly recommend that you see a Podiatrist for an exam and x-rays.  If there is a problem he/she can treat you and if there is no problem, you will feel less concerned.

Good luck, hope that helps.
