Question
Is it possible for the last pair of ribs (12th) to be pushed inward and down a little bit, causing pain in the lower back/flank area, just above the hip bone? If so, what kind of condition is this called?

Answer
Dear Kristy,

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry it took longer than usual to reply to you, however, I had a personal emergency which required me to be away unexpectedly.  I hope you will understand.

Although your question is outside my area of expertise, I can tell you that pain may be due to many different circumstances, including some sort of displacement of elements of the skeleton such as ribs.  So, in short, yes, it's possible that pain may be caused by displaced ribs.

If you wish to have more information, I suggest you contact someone in the medical field who addresses pain and skeletal matters.

Sincerely,
James W. Healey, DC
