Question
I am trying a treatment for my back called spinal decompression and was wondering what you think of it. Is it possible for your disc to regenerate themselves as the treatment promises. I am using a d-vax, I believe that's what it's called.

Answer
Dear Mike,

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry it took longer than usual to reply to you, however, I had a personal emergency which required me to be away unexpectedly.  I hope you will understand.

I do not use decompression machines nor claim expertise in their use.  Your concerns, however, seem to focus a bit more on the validity of the claims associated with it.

Whether such devices are meant for a condition such as yours is beyond my ability to say.  I would think the manufacturer claims it does certain things and I抦 sure there are testimonials about it.  As with all therapeutically-intended procedures or equipment, though, there are probably others who would give it a negative or neutral recommendation, but I don抰 believe you will see these in the marketing materials.  The promotional materials that I see or hear about such devices emphasize the economic benefit to the chiropractor.  The reason the fees for this are typically as high as they are is because the unit is expensive.  In order for the chiropractor to first pay for the machine and also achieve the levels of income implied or explained in the promotional materials, they would have to generate significant revenue from the machine.  It makes sense, then, that it will be marketed aggressively.

In that each person has a unique makeup, it is possible that something may be of therapeutic benefit to one and not another.  That said, it抯 possible that this machine may provide you with something of value just as it is possible it may simply empty your wallet with no satisfaction.  Unfortunately, that will be difficult to know without the powers of a fortuneteller!

So, I am not recommending for or against the use of such a device nor am I determining whether it is suitable for you.  Realize that these are not conclusions from my professional experience with such a device, they are simply observations that could be made, quite frankly, by any layperson.  I hope you find something useful in them.

Sincerely,
James W. Healey, DC
