Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have been having pain on my pec area for some time now. I have tried physical therapy while I was going treating a knee problem, but it didn't help. The therapy was pretty much just streching laying on top of the foam roll.
I have been told it's most likely a strain on the chest cartilage. The pain i stronger in the very middle of the chest but expands to the whole chest area. I can mostly feel the pain when flex my pec, or doing a movement of a pushup.
I was wondering if I should give PT a new try, or do acupuncture or see a chiropractor. I am not sure what is more likely to work. I have taken anti-inflammatory which made it get better, but after I stopped, pain came back.
I really appreciate if you have suggestions.
Thanks so much

ANSWER: Hi Yan,

The thoracic/rib problems are certainly a hassle.  I've had a lot of trouble with that myself.

Without examining you my advice is general.  Chiropractic can usually help with these problems.  The strain or overuse causes some restriction in motion.  This causes uneven grinding and perpetuates the aggravation.

Chiropractic doctors will find the area(s) that is restricted and mobilize it specifically.  Then the stretching and therapy can have some lasting effect.

Acupuncture tends to reduce the pain, but it doesn't mobilize the area.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Hi, thanks for your opinion.
So I did go to a chiropractor. First visit he examined me and took xrays, second visit he recommended me to a 12 sessions program, and said that if I paid for the 12 sessions he would give me a break on the co-pay, $20, instead of $20.
I never been to a doctor that offered me a deal. Is that normal? I thought it was kind of questionable?
And does it really need 12 sessions to help me with the neck and chest pain?

Thanks

Answer
Hi again Yan,

I don't know how much care you might need because I haven't examined you.  However, think about how long the problem has been there.  You work out so you know that a change takes some time and training.

As far as the finances, I have not used insurance over the years even when raising the kids.  So, I negotiated with the docs all the time.  You'd be surprised how well that works.

I think that this doc was trying to let you know that he appreciates you.  I don't know of anything shady here.

BTW you said $20 for both the copay and the break.  Minor problem, I get the idea.

Do well.
