IS IT SAFE TO USE A TENS ON THE CHEST?
9/26 8:55:16

Question
I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH CHEST PAINS (NOT HEART RELATED!!  PULLED MUSCLE) AND HE HAS BEEN USING HIS TENS UNIT ACROSS THE CHEST WALL.  I HAD READ ONLINE THAT THIS WAS UNSAFE AS IT COULD STOP THE HEART, AND ALSO FROM MANY OTHERS, THAT THEY DO IT WITH NO ILL EFFECTS AND ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.  COULD I HAVE YOUR OPINION ON THIS?  IS IT SAFE, AND IF SO, IS THERE A PROPER AND IMPROPER WAY HE SHOULD BE DOING THIS?  THANK YOU!!

Answer
Hi KRYSTIE,

This has been cautioned against in some of the literature.  The TENS was not designed to work like this.  Without some type of professional guidance (ie consulting with a doctor of chiropractic), I would not recommend using the TENS in this fashion.

In my experience it is not likely to cause a problem, but it's just not a good idea.

Hope this helps.
