Dear Sarah,

The missing link in people's understanding of muscles is that muscles are controlled by the brain and the brain learns to control them by means of learning to do so.

Your symptoms indicate poor muscular control in the areas you are feeling (which also accounts for your sciatica).  Stretching and strengthening will not help; you need to learn control.

Here's what you can do:  either undertake one of the self-training programs available at somatics.com (read articles on the approach, first) or see a practitioner who can help you get control of those muscles.

Answer
Dear Sarah,

The best way to learn about somatics is to read the brief articles I have prepared to answer your question, at somatics.com.

In brief, however, somatic training improves people's control of their own body in the ways that nature intended.  It's not natural that your muscles should be so tight and out of control that they hurt you.

The rest gets more detailed, and you should read articles of interest at somatics.com/page4.htm.

You can get a preview of the self-help books by clicking the  Free Preview links at the PURCHASE page of somatics.com.
