Question
I had surgery 9 days ago. I am now having severe right buttock and leg pain that it is difficult to sit or lay down. My Dr. put me on steroids but it is not helping any advice?

Answer
Danielle,

Sounds like your back muscles are in strong contraction.  That's a reflexive response to injury, and surgery is an injury (involves wounding).  (And this says nothing about the pre-condition that led to your needing surgery -- almost certainly involving strong lumbar muscle contractions.)

Steroids don't affect muscular contraction, which can cause nerve impingements, which is what you description sounds like.

When you're ready for physical therapy (meaning safe to exercise), do the somatic exercise found at

http://www.somatics.com/back_pain.htm

After that, somatic exercises found in The Cat Stretch program work better than standard therapeutic exercises.  See the description at

http://www.somatics.com/page7.htm
