What causes osteoporosis?

During our lifetime, bones grow along with our body. In this process the older bones are replaced by the new ones this task is performed by the cells in the body. The cells which help in building the new bone care called osteoclasts. Whereas, the cells which take down the old bones are called osteoblasts. At the childhood stage there is more amount of bone growth in the body which gradually reduces from the age of 30 and as we grow older. This happens due the imbalance between the cells that remove bone and the cells that create bone and it eventually results in osteoporosis.

Bones are made up of various minerals. When compared between men and woman, the rate of bone loss is same, but it increases in women as they reach the age of menopause. This is due to the decrease in the estrogen level after menopause. Estrogen is responsible for bone forming cell to keep working. But as estrogen level decreases the bone forming cells in the women's body which results in osteoporosis. Where men with low testosterone level are exposed to osteoporosis.
