Herbs are used in the treatment of arthritis and other conditions by almost 80 percent of the population around the world. It is becoming more popular in the United States as the cost of pharmaceutical drugs continues to climb. Almost $4 billion is spent on herbs and supplements, and this amount increases every year.

Herbal medicine is often given in the form of teas or pills. The teas are particularly popular since they are tasty as well as medicinal. There are several different kinds that are routinely recommended for pain. Few side effects have been reported by the users of alternative medicine therapies.

Many Other Herbs for Arthritis

Alfafa is one of the herbs used to reduce the pain of arthritis. Drinking alfafa tea has been a popular treatment for centuries. It has minerals that are noted to be rich in nutrients. Another herb that millions of people use for a variety of diseases is Black Cohosh. It has been used by the American Indians for arthritis treatment. It has anti-inflammatory ingredients similar to aspirin.

Celery has been used for treatment of rheumatism and arthritic symptoms since the European immigrants came to America. It is rich in minerals--especially potassium. One recipe suggests to place one teaspoon of celery seeds in a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain the seeds and drink three cups a day when experiencing an acute attack.

Other herbs for arthritis include turmeric, stinging nettle, oregano, wild yam, epsom salt, and many others. Some are taken by mouth and others are used for topical application. There are many combinations that are used by the Chinese or Oriental herbal practitioners in the treatment of pain for arthritis and other types of joint pain.
