Back Pain- Causes And Treatment

Back pain as the name suggests pain felt at the back of the body usually occurs from the muscles, bones, nerves, joints and other structure in the spine. Back pain is the common complaints. Their is sometime sudden onset of the back pain. Back pain is common reason for being absent from the work and to visit the doctor. Back pain can be sudden, constant, and intermittent, stay at one place or radiate to other areas. The pain may dull ache, sharp, piercing or have a burning sensation. The pain may lead to hands, legs as well as arms or feet. Body may feel weak or fragile in the pain.

Back pain is classified into: neck pain, middle back pain, lower back pain or tailbone pain. Back pain is classified according to etiology in mechanical or non-specific back pain and secondary back pain. Around 98% of the people having back pain are found to have nonspecific back pain having no serious pathology. However, secondary pain is caused by underlying medical conditions. Underlying medical condition are metastatic cancer, spinal osteomyelitis, and epidural abscess.
Back pain can sometimes turn to be serious ailment. Back pain can also be sign of some serious problems such as;
�Typical warning signs of potentially life threatening problems
�Severe back pain that interrupt sleep can be the cause of illness like fever or weight loss.
�Back pain also indicates the bone fracture specially if it is after any accident.
�Back pain puts individuals at high risk of spinal fracture for those with medical illness
�People with the history of cancer are likely to develop metastatic disease.

Factors which increase the chance of developing back pain are;
�Mentally stressful job
�Pregnant women are more likely get back pain
�A sedentary lifestyle
�Age factor- Older age people frequently suffer from back pain
�Anxiety
�Depression
�Female suffer more back pain than that of male
�Obesity/overweight
�Smoking
�Physical exercise specially those who do not do regularly

There are many effective medications to reduce back pain or completely overcome it. But much low back pain can be reduced at home itself that too on very few days. People think staying in the bed will help their pain to recover and working too much will stress them more. But these days doctors think that get5ting back to the normal routine can help them to ease their pain.
�For the first one or two days of pain take rest but gradually get back to your daily routine
�Movement of muscles helps the muscles to get stronger, rather staying in the bed which make your pain even more stressful
�If you are an athlete gradually get back to exercises, do not suddenly overburdened yourself. Day by day increase your activity.

�Try to avoid bending, lifting or jumping or that movement which put extra stress.
� In bed, try lying on your side with a pillow between your knees. Or lie on your back on the floor with a pillow under your knees.
�When you sit, place a small pillow, a rolled-up towel, or a lumbar roll in the curve of your back for extra support.
�When you brush your teeth, put one foot on a stool.
� Do not bend over when you put on pants or stockings. Instead, stand with your back against a wall. Then slide your shoulders down the wall, and bring your knee up. Gently step into your pants or stockings, one leg at a time.
