Retrocalcaneal bursitis is most commonly characterized by pain in the posterior heel area. Inflammation of the calcaneal bursa is typically caused by repetitive stress applied to that particular area. Pressure from overly tight or ill-fitting shoes can aggravate the condition. Retrocalcaneal bursitis is also commonly linked to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and gouty arthritis. Having certain forms of arthritis can trigger certain forms of bursitis and vice versa.

Two bursae are located at the base of the Achilles tendon. Retrocalcaneal bursitis is a common form of bursitis that affects a number of athletes. Football players, tennis players, martial artists, soccer players, gymnasts, and runners are among a few of the athletes commonly affected by this type of bursitis.

Buy the Right Gear

Buying the proper athletic wear and administering a thoughtful warm-up routine will help prevent the onset of retrocalcaneal bursitis. The Achilles tendon and the surrounding muscles should be thoroughly stretched out before a rigorous workout. Too often athletes want to get right into the game and neglect to prepare their muscles. The most common reason for injury among athletes is a lack of preparation.

In addition to a thorough stretching and warm-up routine, athletes need to invest in the best equipment on the market. The best equipment isn't always the most expensive. Make sure the shoes you buy and wear aren't too tight and provide ample shock absorption. Ill-fitting shoes can trigger retrocalcaneal bursitis and different types of arthritis, especially in the knee, hip, and ankle areas. Poor equipment will have a long-term effect on your body.
