Understanding How To Prevent Back Pain

When your back is in pain, your whole day is interrupted as the pain can often be overpowering. The back is your body's support system, made up or more than 30 bones and hundreds of nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons. With all of these moveable parts, your back is more vulnerable to problems. By taking extra precautions, you can potentially prevent back pain from happening. Lift Properly

When you need to lift something, it is important to be mindful of what you are doing in order to save yourself from possible back injuries. While lifting, be sure to follow these instructions:

*Plan ahead what you want to do
*Do not be in a hurry
*Separate your feet shoulder-width apart to give yourself a solid base of support
*Bend at the knees
*Tighten your stomach muscles
*Lift with your leg muscles as you stand up
*Do not lift an object alone if it is too heavy

In order to pick up a small object from the floor, lean over the object, slightly bend one knee and extend the other leg behind you. Hold on to a nearby chair or table for support as you reach down to pick up the light object. For heavier objects, there is a different proper way to lift. Get close to the object, bend at the knees and lift with your leg muscles. Remember not to bend at the waist, as this can provoke back pain.

Back Pain At The Office

Whether you are experiencing a dull and achy back or sharp and stabbing pain, back pain can make it hard to focus during your workday. Unfortunately, many occupations can place significant demands on your back. Even routine office work can cause or worsen back pain.

While you are working you can take steps to prevent back pain. Be sure to include physical activity in your daily routine. By maintaining a healthy weight, you can minimize the amount of stress on your back. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. While exercising, it is important to spread your routine throughout the week.

It is also important for you to pay close attention to your posture while standing or sitting at work. If you stand for long periods of time at work, occasionally rest one foot on a stool or small box. While sitting, choose a chair that allows you to rest both feet flat on the floor while keeping your knees level with your hips.
