A lot of back pain sufferers, find that lying on their stomachs can help to relieve the pain. Most lower back pain comes from strain and stress, and lying on the back can actually intensify this due to the muscle tension. Lying on your stomach, however, can relax these muscles and relieve the pain.

Treat yourself. Buy a new pillow, not for your head, but for your knees. One of the best ways to relieve lower back pain is to sleep with a pillow between your thigh and knee area.

Losing weight is a good way to ease the pain. If you are carrying around some extra pounds, you can reduce the extra strain that you are putting on your back! Overweight people are more likely to have lower back problems because the extra strain on these muscles and ligaments increase the chance that something will be out of alignment. Aim to maintain a healthy height/weight proportion.

Avoid bending down quickly without warming up. Tense muscles contribute to clipped ligaments and severe lower back pain. When you need to bend down, do it in a slow motion, instead of quickly, to avoid hurting your back. Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your back warm in cold weather, in order to avoid the tensing of muscles.
