Would you be surprised to learn that many people who suffer from back pain are able to lead relatively pain-free, happy lives? This may seem unbelievable to you if you also suffer with chronic pain in your back.

If you have been unable to control your back pain, the single best thing that you can do for yourself is to know when it's time to seek help. Do not feel embarrassed by having to ask someone for help with moving things or working around the house. You don't want to make the injury worse when you dust or move furniture.

Avoid aggravating any back pain by checking out the contents of boxes and containers before you try to lift them. The content of the box can be surprisingly heavy and can put unexpected strains on your back. Do not rely on the picture outside the box in determining what is inside of it.

For the health of your back, you should not drink alcohol to excess, but a small amount of red wine may aid in alleviating some back pain. Wine provides benefits in relaxing your muscles, and also acts as an effective sleep aid if you drink a little bit. This may be just what your aching back needs.

A firm, supportive mattress can lead to a major reduction in back pain. If you're hesitant to buy a new mattress because of the expense, ask your mattress dealer about trial mattresses. If you purchase a mattress protector, you may be able to get a month-long trial on a mattress, so that you don't have to purchase it until you are sure it is the right mattress for your back.

Compress your back to reduce pain immediately. Wrapping your back will compress it and reduce your range of motion, both of which will help your back heal. Do not make the wrap so tight that it is uncomfortable, but make it secure.

When lifting heavy objects, bend and lift with your knees, not your lower back. Using an incorrect technique to lift heavy items can result in serious back problems. Using your knees and bringing the item close against your body while lifting will use your core muscles and avoid a back strain.

A common misconception is the notion that those with back pain should steer clear of exercise. Many of those afflicted by back pain believe that exercising will make their pain worse, but that simply is not always the case. Properly stretching the back muscles is a great pain reliever for lots of people.

Regular massages are a great way to soothe back pain. Many areas of daily life can place a great deal of stress and strain on our backs. Massages can be used in two ways. Short term they can help any current issues, and long term they can keep the pain under control.

When your back is hurting too much, try to use these different tips. Back pain can be quite a serious issue, so it must be treated.
