Osteroporosis is a condition characterized by thin and weak bones that can break easily. It significantly reduces the strength of the bones and makes them fragile reducing the density. This condition leads to abnormally-porous bone that makes it spongy and might result in frequent fractures.

Women are more prone to osteroporosis than men and so they should take extra care. Deficiency of vitamin D and calcium can intensify this condition but it is not the prime cause.

Unbelievably, osteroporosis might exist in the bones for decades without showing any symptoms and a patient would not realize until bones start to break. Apart from this fact, some osteroporosis fractures might escape detection unless it show any symptoms. It is because of this reason, many patients remain unaware of osteroporosis until they experience a painful fracture. So, if you are suffering from any pain on bones then you should immediately consult a doctor and discuss it candidly.

Study has revealed that after the age of 35, both women and men normally lose 0.3%-0.5% bone density every year as ageing process. Estrogen, a hormone present in women helps in maintaining the bone density and make them stronger. But after menopause, the estrogen level sinks and as a result the loss of bone density also accelerates.

Among the numerous medications available, boniva is a drug prescribed by doctors to increase the chances of bone formation and lower the risk of bone fracture. This medication releases significant amount of calcium into the blood which in turn is beneficial to bones. Doctors usually prescribe this medication to women at the time of post menopause and also to aged persons. It has certain side-effects which are less severe. But it is highly advised to take this drug under proper administration of an expert physician.

A proper diet can help you in strengthening your bones apart from medication. So, it is advised that you should include calcium rich food in your diet and ward off osteroporosis.
