Arthritis is an ailment affecting joints and muscles around the joint. With the attack of arthritis, movement becomes quite difficult and painful. The moment, the patient tries to move the affected joint, he or she experiences shooting pain, warmth and burning sensation in the joint area. The root of the pain lies in the wear and tear of the bone protecting cushions called cartilages. Cartilages wear out owing to factors like heredity, aging of the body or obesity. Aging makes the cartilages weak and brittle. The cartilage forming protein starts breaking up and water content in the cartilage rises. They become incapable of repairing themselves after daily wear and tear. The result is loss of cartilage.

Once the cartilages are lost, the bones meeting at a joint rub against each other, and may erode to form spur like structures called osteophytes. All this leads to painful and swollen joints. Apart from breaking off of cartilages, collection of fluids or uric acid crystals within the joint also causes pain.
