The bisphosphonates, like Actonel, Boniva, and Fosamax, increase bone density in the short run by decreasing bone loss. But for some reason, a rare side effect is an overgrowth of bone in the jaw. It is especially prevalent after someone is treated for cancer and then given an intravenous form of a bisphosphonate. The chances here are as high as 10% of getting this condition.

So what are the drugs that are being prescribed for millions of people worldwide to treat Osteoporosis? Primarily there are three: Fosamax, Boniva and Actonel. There are others that are administered intravenously but let's concentrate on the three most popular.

In case the dentists notice any kind of bone loss, then they perform a procedure known as bone grafting. Bone graft is performed to increase the density of bone to support the teeth. The density of the bone allows enough space for drilling a hole to instill the necessary metal which holds the crown.

Fortunately, there is an implant system, which along with the help of an experienced practitioner, ensures long-term form and aesthetic function. Periodontists have spent the past seven years spreading the word about the implant system, in hopes that the world's dentists and practitioners will adopt the best implant treatment possible.

More than 10 million Americans have the bone-weakening disease osteoporosis - approximately 15% of women and 4% of men over the age of 50. Another 34 million or so have osteopenia - bone density that is below normal and may lead to osteoporosis. And every year, two million people with osteoporosis have a so-called - "osteoporotic fracture," usually of the hip, spine or wrist.

Those first implants evidently worked, because archaeologists found plaque on the shells, indicating they had been in the users' mouths for quite some time. Aside from this exception, however, dentures remain to be the most common replacement for the original teeth until a few years ago.

Many people might not know this, but there is a close connection between bone health and healthy teeth. Although technically speaking teeth are not really bones, but they are supported and anchored by the bone in the jaw and weakening of the jaw bone can lead to tooth loss. As the density of bone supporting teeth decreases, they can lose their solid foundation and may fall out.

If your BMD is low compared to normal peak BMD, you are said to have Osteopenia. Having osteopenia means there is a greater risk, that as time passes, you may develop BMD that is very low compared to normal, known as osteoporosis.

The gum and bones are saved because it prevents the bone loss that occurs when there are no teeth to support for the jaws. Bridges and dentures can not prevent the long-term bone and gum loss.
