There can be numerous reasons behind weakness in legs. Some of these are Addison's disease, polymyositis, multiple myeloma, and hyperthyroidism.

Weakness in legs is a common problem of old age. However, it is not restricted to elderly people, as a large number of young children below 15 years of age have also been reported to suffer from it. It occurs when there is a decrease in the strength in one or more muscles of the legs. There can be several probable causes for this condition. Some of the major ones are described in this article, followed by some efficacious home remedies for the same.

Causes

Addison's Disease

Addison's disease is the medical condition, which is marked by the body's inability to produce sufficient amounts of adrenal hormones, such as cortisol and aldosterone. It occurs due to destruction of the central part of the adrenal glands. The patients of Addison's disease commonly suffer from lightheadedness, weight loss, joint aches, chronic diarrhea, fatigue, and weak legs and arms.

Polymyositis

Polymyositis is a medical condition, which is characterized by chronic inflammation of muscles. It is caused by the invasion of the white blood cells into the muscles of the body. The muscles located close to the trunk or torso are more commonly affected by this disorder. The prominent symptoms are swelling around the eyes, breathing difficulties, trouble with swallowing, muscle aches and pain, fatigue, and weak legs while walking, standing, or even while taking rest.

Hyperthyroidism

Excessive secretion of thyroid hormones due to overactive thyroid gland is called hyperthyroidism. It is symptomized by various uncomfortable physical conditions. They include nervousness, heat intolerance, moist warm skin, hair loss, increased bowel movements, muscle cramps, weakness in body parts like legs and arms, etc. Hyperthyroidism can itself be a symptom of a number of diseases. It often gives rise to sudden weakness. Some examples are Grave's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, trophoblastic tumors, etc.

Multiple Myeloma

Plasma cells are a type of lymphocytes. The condition of cancerous plasma cells located at multiple sites in the bone marrow is called multiple myeloma. It is typically marked by the secretion of all or a part of monoclonal antibodies. Multiple myeloma causes adverse effects on the immunity and makes the patient susceptible to infections. Some of the noticeable symptoms are back and rib pain, nausea, visual changes, altered mentation, bleeding gums, leg swelling, and weakness.

Natural Treatment
  • Have a glass of carrot juice to increase blood circulation in the legs.
  • Increase the intake of proteins in your daily diet. Foods rich in proteins are eggs, nuts, and yogurt.
  • Take supplements of Lysine and Coenzyme Q10. They promote formation of bones, cartilage and connective tissue. Consult a doctor prior to intake of such supplements.
  • Follow a moderate but regular exercise regime. Walking, cycling, swimming and yoga will help a lot in strengthening the bones and muscles of legs.
  • Take adequate rest to speed up the process of natural recovery.
The natural treatments suggested above can only accelerate the process of treatment. They cannot actually cure the disorder. You need to get effective medical treatment from a health care professional. The sooner you get yourself diagnosed and treated, the better for your long term health. Therefore, visit a doctor and get necessary assistance.
