You can manage your arthritis and feel healthy this fall by incorporating these easy exercises into your daily life.

Great Autumn Exercises for People with Arthritis

Autumn is the perfect time to rededicate yourself to managing your arthritis and staying healthy with exercise. Justin Price, owner of The Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego, California, told the Mayo Clinic that fall is the optimal season for setting goals and making promises because “you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months.”

We all know that after fall comes winter and it’s certainly difficult to start and maintain fitness goals when it’s frosty outside and all you want to do is stay snuggled under your blanket sipping hot cocoa and reading a book.

Take advantage of this autumn to get yourself healthy and into an exercise routine using these helpful tips:

Spend Time Outdoors

Fall has amazing weather almost everywhere in the world. You finally get an escape from the heat of summer and a break before the cold. You don’t want to miss out on this gorgeous, albeit fleeting, season. Go for walks in the crisp air, or find some park trails or easy hikes so you can marvel at the falling leaves.

If snow falls early in your neck of the woods, try leisurely cross-country skiing or snowshoeing for an afternoon. If you live close to the beach, try going for walks on the sand—there aren’t quite as many beach-goers during the fall months so you can have a little peace and quiet.

Start Something New

Fall is the time when a lot of classes, specials, and gym membership deals start up again. Have you always wanted to try aqua Zumba or yoga? Take this time to be brave and sign up. Make sure you have your doctor’s blessing before you begin any new exercise routine, especially if it’s one that can be hard on your body like karate or weight lifting.

Maximize TV Time

Maximize your TV time by exercising while watching your favorite shows. Fall is when many TV shows begin their new seasons, so while you’re watching “NCIS” or “Dancing with the Stars,” lift some small weights, do some yoga poses, or stand in a lunge. During the commercials, do some sit-ups, or take a quick jog throughout the house. Many professional ballerinas and contemporary dancers stretch while watching TV or doing other sedentary activities. Adopt some of their techniques by doing quick hamstring, quad and hip stretches while sitting on the couch.

Make It Part of Everyday Life

There are easy ways to augment your daily activities with exercises. You can park at the back of the parking lot or get a standing desk at work or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Try taking a stroll for 2 minutes for every 20 to 30minutes you sit. Remember, it doesn’t have to seem like exercise in order to work your muscles. You can also do fall-esque activities like raking leaves or winterizing your garden or carving pumpkins. Pumpkin carving can be a great workout for your hands and arms.

Deal with Darkness

The days slowly get shorter as fall progresses, especially when daylight savings time ends. Even though you’re going for a walk at 6:00 p.m., be smart and safe when you venture outside. Wear reflective clothing and bring a flashlight and cell phone. If possible, when you exercise outside, do it with a friend. And don’t forget to wear lots of layers. You can easily take off your sweater if you start sweating.

Find Your Groove

This is the moment to discover what exercise routine works best for you so you can continue it into the winter. You may love exercising alone or with friends, at the gym or at home, with music or without, in the morning or at night. Find what feels best for your body.

Rejuvenate

Wellness doesn’t stop at moving your body. Do other activities that promote health like reading a self-help book, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, getting a massage or learning to meditate. Winter can be hard on people’s mindsets because of the gray days and long, dark nights, so prepare both body and mind for the coming months through happy thoughts and regular exercise.
