Scientists proved that Curcumin and other Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) constituents have unique health benefits like anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic properties, promoting healthy DNA function and can also be useful in atherosclerosis, weight management, depression and Rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Turmeric-

Curcumin is efficacious in alleviating the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis just as non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Diclofenac do. In animal studies it has been observed that Curcumin is effective in relieving pain. Curcumin blocks numerous inflammatory signaling molecules that aggravate the inflammation of painful joints.Ref 1) LI WQ Dehnade F, Zafarullah M. Oncostatin M induced matrix metalbproteinase and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 genes expression in chondrocytes requires . Janus Kinase / STAT signaling pathway, J. Immunol 2001 Marl ;166(5):3491-8

The anti-rheumatic activity of Curcumin, isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma Longa, has been clinically demonstrated in cases of rheumatoid arthritis. (Deodhar SD et al, 1980, Indian J Med Res, 71 (April), 632-634; Srimal RC et al, 1973, J Pharm Pharmacol, 25, 447.)

Due to the anti-inflammatory activity of Curcumin, the powdered rhizomes of Curcuma Longa have been found to be effective in the treatment of sprains and inflammation (Mukhopadhyay et al, 1982, Agents Actrons, 12(4), 508-515.)

Turmeric as an Antioxidant -

Extracts from the rhizome of Curcuma Longa are widely used as a food additive in India. It has been shown that this extract (Turmeric) as well as Curcumin and related phenolic compounds have a powerful antioxidant action when tested in in-vitro systems.

Mechanism of antioxidant activity of Curcumin was discussed during 207th national meeting of the American Society held in March 1994 in San Diego, California. According to an Anglo American team, Curcumin, isolated from Turmeric, proved to be an excellent scavenger, continuously removing damaging radicals, (Burke M, Curcumin’s dual defense against disease, Chemistry & industry, 8,289)

Turmeric for Skin conditions-

From historical times it is known to be an antiseptic, antiviral and an antibacterial herb. Turmeric Improves skin texture, and relieves the problems related to skin disease like inflammation, itching, Acne, rashes etc.

A daily dose of at least 750 to 900mg of pure Turmeric Curcumin extract (not as powder) should help people with Arthritic conditions. It also works as an antioxidant and helps alleviate many skin conditions. When Turmeric is combined with Boswellia and Ashwagandha, the synergistic benefits are exceptional.
