The term arthritis comes from the Greek arthron and stands for ‘joint’ and the Latin it is – inflammation. Arthritis is the disease that affects the musculoskeletal system, causing disability in old people. The term includes over 100 types of joint diseases that cause swelling, redness, stiffness and heat in the infected area.
The pain usually appears due to the inflammation of the joint or the lining. The incidents of arthritis get more frequent with age and 3 people out of 5 get affected below they are 65 years old.

8 Signs of Arthritis
The signs of arthritis vary depending on the severity of the problem and the type of arthritis one suffers from. The most common ones include:

1. warm/red joints;
2. stiffness of joints;
3. joint swelling;
4. joint pain;
5. joint tenderness;
6. grinding sensations;
7. deformity of joints;
8. lumps and bumps around joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
This is the commonest type of arthritis when the immune system of the body attacks synovial membrane and results in pain, stiffness and swelling. This disease becomes a chronic condition, which is very hard to diagnose, as the symptoms are pretty common. So, the disease develops, being undetected.

Juvenile Arthritis
Arthritis never takes age into account. There are many types of arthritis that affect children. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (pauciarticular, polyarticular and systemic) affects either a few joints or the whole body. The disorder can be detected only when the symptoms last for 6 weeks, which makes it practically impossible to treat the problem completely.

Polymyalgia Rheumatica
This is a common problem for people after 50 years. It causes stiffness of hips, neck and shoulders. There are lots of other conditions with similar symptoms. This is why polymyalgia rheumatica is hard to diagnose on early stages. However, when it is diagnosed early, it can be effectively treated.

Ankylosing Spondylitis
This highly inflammatory chronic disease affects the spine causing frequent low back pain and stiffness that lasts for months. This type of arthritis affects mostly men aged 16-35. Cases of ankylosing spondylitis in women are rare.

All these diseases are characterized by joint inflammation with redness and warmth as main symptoms. Joints can also be tender to touch, and the pressing around an elicit pain indicates that the joint is inflamed and requires proper treatment.
