Question
I just finished 5 sessions of chemotherapy which has given me horrible neuropathy in my left foot. Even tho it is "numb" I also have the pain from what feels like needles and also frequent sharp, stabbimg pains. It's not bad in my right foot and also minor in my hands. Will this go away once I am done with chemo treatments and is there anything I can do in the meantime to alleviate the pain. I take B-Complex vitamins and Lyrica...neither seem to do anything.

Answer
Hi Diane,

Neuropathy associated with chemotherapy is unpredictable.  Some people continue to have the problem after the chemo even years later.  However, taking B vitamins may assist in the repair.  I would consider a neuropathy vitamin complex known as Benfotiamine instead of a typical B vitamin.  I would talk to your dr about stopping the Lyrica if there is no relief.  That just adds a strong medication that may not be necessary.  Physical therapy can be helpful as well, allowing increased blood flow to the foot.  I use Cold laser therapy for this condition and it can be helpful.  If the pain continues I typically perform cryosurgery which is nerve freezing for relief of the pain.

I would try topical capsaicin cream which can be very effecive if used regularly.

Hope that helps.  Good luck.
