Question
I just recieved my MRI results on a severe sprain that i sustained on my right ankle. MY physician  told me that i tore my anterior talofibular ligament and the extensor retinaculum.. I already set up an appmnt to see an orthopedic doctor but im too anxious to know this- will i need surgery or will physical therapy be the route of healing? Do i have this option or does my ortho doc have the final decision? Thank you very much for your professional opinion.

Answer
I would go with your doctor's suggestion. Often immobilization for a period of time followed by physical therapy is fine.  Other times surgery may be required.  Your evaluating physician will be able to give you the best suggestion.

All the best,
Andrew Schneider, DPM
