Pain Medication ater Surgery

Question
I recently had Gall Bladder Surgery. I am 72 and in very good health, physically fit with proper diet, exercise, medications for what ails me and do not take any medications not needed, OTC pain killers, etc. I made it know I did not want Pain Killers as I am not subjected to pain and handle it holistic if I have any. After Surgery I was alert and up, no pain, swelling, redness, or nausea; neverthless I was given Ketorolac  14 hrs ater & 22 hrs after surgery. I had specifically asked, no pain killers. My input was not considered. Ketorolac is noted NOT to be given for mild pain, but used for Moderately Severe pain. It aslo notes it can cause heart attack, stomach problems, to take with caution if taking water pill, warfarin or enalapril(all three I take). I also take Nexium for GERD. I had no adverse effects because of the Ketorolac, but am refusing to pay for it, which I think is reasonable. What is your opinion. Thanks and Regards

Answer
Hi Bill and thanks for writing,

I think you may have a battle on your hands unless you had something in writing prior to the surgery. The hospital can always argue that the trained medical team did what they deemed was in your best interest to promote your health which you agreed to when you signed your informed consent form (which is where you should write any clauses like "no narcotics post-op without my verbal consent" next time if you want them to pay attention). You might want to consult with  lawyer if you're serious about it and ever face a medical procedure in the future.

Good luck though,
Margot
