Question
My son was born with a cleft lip and palate. He is now 9yrs old and we are beginning orthodontic care.  He has CHIP for Health Insurance and they are telling us that the orthodontic care is not covered because it is not a health issue. We are not having orthodontic care because of the "look" of his teeth it is due to the placement of his teeth and we believe that he has teeth growing in the roof (palate) of his mouth.  Is there any help for getting insurance to cover this? Should we apply for SS disability? Or is there some other help in paying for the potential $10,000 orthodontic bill over the next few years?

Answer
Actually in your sons case it sounds like it could be a health issue if the teethe are growing into the roof of his mouth. If you/he qualifies for SS disability then apply. My best advice is to get a consultation with and attorney who specializes in healthcare issues. He/she may be able to help you challenge the insurances decision. Best of luck to you.
