How can I place my ribs back in myself?

Question
Hi:

I saw your answer to Lisa about ribs under scapula etc.  Today, after lifting 50# of feed, again, the rib on left side under scapula is out.  I have tried everything "logically" possible to get the rib back in & now it hurts more than usual.  Our Chiropractor is 6 hours away.  There is a chiropractor in this town but she is not answering her phone today.  IDEAS?  There must be some manipulation I can do to get this rib back in....

Answer
Dear Liz,

Unfortunately there is not a proceedure that you can do to adjust a rib yourself.  Even with all the training, clinical hours and certifications, I cannot adjust myself...I have to get another chiropractor to do it for me.

The way a chiropractor adjusts the spine, ribs, and other joints is through a careful pre-tensioning of the surrounding tissues, a force which needs to be applied in a specific vector,(line of drive) according to the anatomical and biomechanic composition of the joint, and with a substantial amount of speed.  This must be applied appropriately without the use of two much pressure.

Believe me, there are times I wish I was able to adjust/manipulate myself, but it just isn't possible.
What I would recommend is that you use something to apply pressure to the area and use ice to help alleviate pain and inflammation until you can get to a chiropractor and have them adjust you.  Unfortunately, Thursdays are the traditional days that many chiropractic physicians are out of the office.  You may also want to contact D.O., Doctor of Osteopathy- some of them have additional trainning, know how to adjust, and may be able to help you.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear Liz, but those are the best options you have for immediate care.

Respectfully, Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
