Question
Hello. My mother has had a fall and been diagnosed with a crushed vertebra in the lower back. She is 84 and has osteoporosis. The hospital have given her pain killers, vitamin D injections and calcium tablets, but no treatment to the back. She is going into respite care until able to walk safely. Is there anything else that can be done for her? What is the chance of a full recovery for someone her age and with her problems?
Thank you.

Answer
Hello,  that's a tough situation. I have crushed vertebrae as well and made a full recovery. I was only 15 when it hapenned. Her options are limited because of her age.
There is a new procedure where they inject cement into the vertebrae. She may be too old and I do not remember the name of the procedure. It is brand new.
It also depends on which vertebrae was crushed.
One thing she can try is called low level laser therapy or cold laser. It's safe, gentle, and will reduce inflammation and reduce pain. Some chiropractors use this equipment.
If you tell me where you live I may be able to get someone for her to see.
