Question
I recently purchased and used a living social deal for a chiropractic consultation and adjustment.  During the consultation, the chiropractor took a couple x rays and showed me the results.  He says that I have a 0 degree curve in the cervical area of the spine, which should be 43 degrees, and my atlas bone is at a 3 degree curve, which should be 30 degrees.  He has recommended that I start a treatment of getting adjustments twice a week for 12 weeks.

During the consultation, I informed him that I recently injured my shoulder while weight lifting.  I went to an orthopedic doctor and she informed me that I have 'loose joints'.  I have also talked to a family friend that is a chiropractor (she's too far away to see her for a consultation) and she has told me that loose joints is another way of saying weak ligaments.  She told me that I should not get too many adjustments with the weak ligament issue because they may not be strong enough to hold the adjustment in place, and the adjustments may cause the ligaments to get even weaker.

I am interested in getting a third opinion on all of this.  Is the living social chiropractor overstating my issues?  Is there such a thing as too many adjustments? Should the chiropractor consider the weak ligaments when recommending this treatment?

I should also note that I do not have any chronic back pain or head aches, which I think are normal for someone that does not have the optimal curve in the cervical area of the spine.

Answer
Without an actual hands on exam and seeing the xrays in person, it is difficult to put a diagnosis on this...that being said...I have been in practice 20 years.  Firstly, you cannot force the body back into a curve.  It will go where it is appropriate for you. (normal cervical curve is a 17cm curve).  I also, to this day cannot tell you how many adjustment it will take to "fix" something.  2 a week for 24 weeks sounds excessive to me, and your friend is right.  Loose ligaments do not like too many adjustments.  It can cause harm.
