Knee braces are supports that you wear for a painful or injured knee. Some people use them to prevent knee injuries during sports. They come in many sizes, colors and designs. With such a huge range of knee supports it can be very difficult choosing the correct one. The pain can be caused from a variety of reasons, some of the most common being knee surgery, knee replacements, sports injuries. Have categorized our supports into Low, Medium, High and Ultimate level groups to help you make the correct choice for your knee injury. Braces are made from combinations of metal, foam, plastic, elastic material and straps.
When are knee braces used?
A knee brace combined with physical therapy is the best way to reduce the pain and get back to pain free life. Different knee problems require different knee braces. Your doctor may suggest one kind of knee brace after knee surgery. Some doctors may choose another kind of knee brace for support instead of surgery for a torn knee ligament. They can be used for preventative reasons or for support following an injury. Which type of knee brace you choose, it should not interfere with normal knee function or increase the risk of injury to any other part of the body or to other players.
TYPES OF KNEE BRACES:
Knee Sleeves
Knee sleeves are often used for people who are lifting large amounts of force and performing squats. Although technically not a knee brace, a knee sleeve is the most common type of knee support worn by the average athlete and more casual exerciser, including tennis players, joggers, and walkers. Knee sleeves are not technically a knee brace but are very common among average athletes. A knee sleeve provides some support but does not function the same way a knee brace would Although you can buy knee sleeves off the shelf at your local pharmacy, you should still check with your doctor before using one.
Functional Braces
After an injury, your doctor may prescribe a knee brace as part of your rehabilitation program. They are used after a knee injury or knee surgery to help reduce knee instability. They provide pressure and support in certain areas based on which ligament has been injured. A functional knee brace comes in several types, and your doctor will prescribe the one that matches the severity of your injury. Functional braces are used after a Knee injury and provide support while the knee injury is healing.
Rehabilitative Braces
Rehabilitative braces typically consist of foam liners that surround the calf, thigh, and knee, along with full-length rigid bars on both sides. Their purpose is to limit the range of motion of the knee protecting the knee from further injury while it heals. Again, the most common injuries that would require a rehabilitative. Braces are usually off-the-shelf and adjustable in size. A total of six to eight straps hold the brace in place.
Prophylactic Braces
Prophylactic knee braces are worn by athletes who participate in high risk contact sports and want to minimize the risk for injury. Prophylactic braces are constructed of bars, hinges, and adhesive straps and designed to protect the knee from damage that can occur during contact sports such as football, basketball, and hockey.
You may also need a knee brace for pain in the front of your knee that isn't getting better with strengthening and flexibility exercises. Braces don't seem to work well to stop knee injuries from happening. Get your doctor's advice if you want to try a knee brace.
